Located in Lapeer's business district, Creative Compounding caters to the health needs of individuals who require a more personalized approach, including many women who need natural hormone replacement therapy rather than ready-made prescription drugs.
"We work closely with the patient and the doctor," said Jerry DuFresne, a licensed registered pharmacist who has been compounding prescription medicines for the past 10 years. "We do not practice medicine or dispense a prescription drug without a doctor's prescription. But we can work with that prescription to personalize it to the needs of the patient."
Jerry's wife, Cheryl, works closely with him in the area of natural hormone replacement, a specialty in which she has been professionally trained.
Other needs which might be met through Creative Compounding are in the areas of pain management and flavoring for children's medicine. They also make up a variety of nonprescription over-the-counter creams and lotions to treat psoriasis. In addition, the firm is currently working on investigational treatment for multiple sclerosis.
Creative Compounding has just added a new service--nutritional counseling--available locally with Mike Sadler, R.Ph., owner of Advanced Pharmacy in North Branch.
Some of the business' most loyal customers are pets, who require specific medicines in forms not always available in ready-made varieties. "Sometimes we have to make up a liquid form of a medicine for a finicky cat who won't take a pill," said DuFresne. "Other times we might make up a topical cream, which much less stressful on an animal than taking a pill orally."
